This conversion course focuses on software development based on components,
unlike many traditional courses which are more concerned with theoretical aspects.
It is based on sound software engineering principles and includes traditional,
formal and object-oriented design and development methods. This ensures that
postgraduates are distinguished from those who have more management-focused skills.
The course enables students to develop a good knowledge of computer software
development. Because of its emphasis on software system construction and data
organisation, the qualification is applicable to a wide variety of fields,
especially the more technical applications, as well as directly to the computer
industry itself. The optional specialist modules, combined with the
dissertation, provide further experience in specific areas.
This course is aimed at those who have a first degree in a subject other than a
computing-related discipline, and who wish to study the software aspects of
computing. The part-time mode is designed for people with a variety of
experiences in private, public and technical fields.

Teaching and Assessment
Teaching methods vary according to the subject and typically include lectures,
which provide a theoretical basis, and practicals, which are used to strengthen
students' understanding by active involvement. Assessed coursework and projects
form the basis for continuous assessment. These methods have been developed to
provide the varied support that our students require, and include opportunities
for students to discuss their work directly with their lecturers.
Assessment is by a combination of exam, coursework and dissertation.
Funding
